Many students do not live in a school district that can provide them with adequate or ample materials and other educational resources. The United States is extremely diverse in regards to its zip codes. Some students will live in areas where their public schools can provide them with, what many parents consider to be, a free private school education, while other students will barely get the basics. Some parents will be able to work with their children after school to help out with homework while other parents will work two jobs to put food on the table. This discrepancy between various areas of the country can leave many children and teens slipping through the cracks. In the past 10 years or so, much of the responsibility has fallen upon teachers. Many teachers are expected to work after hours, off the clock, to help out with their students without receiving additional pay. Unfortunately, this prevents teachers from seeing their own families or from holding, a very necessary, second job due to their daytime salary. As a group, we generally tend to look for somebody to blame before we look for a solution. This often makes a solution harder to find and delays change or reform that may be necessary. Identifying the problem Most people have already identified the problem. Looking towards the future, where can we go and how can we improve? One group alone: The school districts, teachers, or parents will not likely be solely responsible for a solution. Rather, working together is a great way to start bringing our public schools back to an envious state. It is recommended that parents think about their children as individuals. Most parents do this anyway, although children are often compared to other children. We certainly cant blame parents for doing this as the emphasis on standardized testing and competition is ever prevalent in the American secondary school system (READ: New School: Adjusting to Advances in Technology). However, parents know their children best and will often be able to see what is missing in their childs education. For example, if a child is receiving As and Bs in core subjects â€" math and English â€" but they seem to be frustrated or bored, then the family may be best served by adding extracurricular activities into their kid’s supplemental education. If the student is struggling with math, English, or science then they may need to receive supplemental education services to help them with these all-important subjects. Seeking additional services Every single family in America has a budget of some kind. For some, the budget will be very small and for others it will be very large, but everybody has limits. With the advent of e-learning and other free technology, many parents can find supplemental education services for free or at a very low cost for their children. For many families across the US, this can fill the education gap. Parents who need the services of an Orange County college prep tutor or a core subjects tutor will not likely have any difficulty finding one. However, what if your child is only truly happy when he or she is playing the violin? What if your child loves STEM activities and is already building his or her own apps at the age of 9 or 10? These services are often not available in the public school system. The advancements of remote education and technology are becoming greater by the day. Parents, teachers, college students, and private education companies are searching for and finding these programs week after week. See what she had to say about her experience attending Brigham Young University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Abigail: Brigham Young University is a very large walking campus, to some students chagrin. I walked for most of my time as a student and planned my commutes and my class schedule accordingly, but I also rode a bike for a couple of years which was very practical. There are large student parking lots on the perimeters of campus, but they were usually always full during popular class times and you typically still had a substantial hike on foot after you parked. The city of Provo does have a bus system, but I never had occasion to use it. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Brigham Young University? Abigail:Very available, I wish I had used this resource more. Professors are open about their office hours and I always felt comfortable seeking out a teacher in their office. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Abigail: Social! Dynamic! Family style! Fun! At BYU you can choose dorm style or cooking style apartments. I chose the latter because I wasnt a fan of the cafeteria diet, but there certainly are options for that. Since this is a church school, student resident life is organized by into congregations as well, and that group dictates most of the social life/activities you are involved in. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Brigham Young University? Abigail: Im not sure what major/program is most popular at BYU, but they do have a prestigious language program largely due to the fact that most of the student body are LDS and many of them have served volunteer foreign language speaking missions. I studied Spanish Translation, and the program did a thorough job of orienting us toward the world of opportunities in that field and there was always a wealth of experience available within an international church. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Abigail: It is extremely easy to make friends as a freshman. There are always activities in your building and in your ward that connect you to the people you live around and go to church with. I was part of Sigma Delta Pi as part of my Spanish degree, but there were never any events or meetings associated with my membership in that group. Your ward plays a stronger, more significant role in your social life than a fraternity or sororityin fact, I dont know of any fraternities or sororities on campus. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Abigail: The Career Center is always buzzing and there is an actively updated job board with campus job postings. This information is also available online, and I was always able to find a campus job. There is also an annual job fair with many reputable companies who come to recruit. BYU students are known for being good students, good citizens, squeaky clean, honest, hard working, and cultured. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Abigail: The BYU library is enormous and mostly underground. There is always a place to study whether you do better in large space with many people studying quietly or more secluded cubicles or nooks and crannies that you can sneak away to. There are also many computer labs. I didnt have a computer for most of my time as a student and I was always able to find one to use on campus as well as to print. Describe the surrounding town at Brigham Young University. Abigail: Provo and Orem are fun college towns with malls, movie theatres, restaurants, indoor rock climbing, museums, water parks, canyons, mountains, and the Provo River. I was around south Provo and Orem almost as much as I was on campus. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Abigail: Its a huge student body. 30,000 plus students. I had some very large lectures with hundreds of people, but I also had small classes with only a dozen people. I loved both experiences. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Abigail: Every Tuesday morning the whole campus shuts down at 11:00 for a campus wide devotional or forum. She is currently a Washington D.C. tutor specializing in Spanish, German, and writing, among several other subjects. See what she had to say about her experience at the University of Missouri-Columbia: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Miranda: The large campus is set adjacent to the main downtown Columbia business area, and both are easy to navigate on foot or by bike. The campus is set up to provide students with all or almost all of their basic needs, as it has dining halls and stores as well as accommodation and job opportunities all on site. In addition, the downtown area has many fun events, restaurants, and small shops. The core area now even contains a full-size grocery store Luckys and a miniature Walmart, where students can find a variety of useful items. However, students who wish to travel beyond this core area for example, to visit big-box stores or hold an off-campus job will probably need to have a car. Most students do have cars, even if they dont use them daily, and some majors almost require it. Columbia is a reasonably safe place, and I always felt comfortable moving around alone, even at night. However, robberies and sexual assaults do happen. I found it useful to subscribe to police and campus alerts and to not waste time when I was moving around alone at night, especially in parking garages and similarly secluded places. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Miranda:Very available. I never had trouble getting in touch for extra help or advice. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Miranda:The dorm life was wonderful, and I made many friends in the dorms. My only complaint is that the dining plan is a bit draconian everyone living in the dorms is required to have a minimum 11-meal per week plan, which was annoying to me as I liked to cook, go out to restaurants with friends, and usually just ate cereal in my room for breakfast. I had some wasted meals, even on the smallest plan. The dining halls offer good quality and variety, but are also overcrowded and not as well set up for students just wanting to grab a quick meal on their own. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Miranda:Mizzou is an enormous school that offers a dizzying array of majors and programs. Journalism is very well represented and supported to the point where it sometimes felt like a separate and fully functioning school on its own. I also studied Spanish, German, and anthropology, and while those schools were not as large or wealthy, I had no complaints. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Miranda:Greek life plays a significant role for some students, but exists fairly separately. As a non-Greek student, I didnt feel discriminated against or left out. However, some dorms feed heavily into Greek life, so students should consider picking their dorm according to their Greek aspirations (or lack thereof). I thought it was very easy to meet people and make friends as a freshman. Its helpful to pick a dorm that shares your values and interests, but also to keep an open mind about all the different ways you can meet people on campus and in the wider community. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Miranda:The Career Center offers tutoring services, resume review, and mock interviews. I thought it was a strong resource, especially for students whose own academic programs are not large enough to offer those services independently. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Miranda:Sometimes computers can become scarce at peak times, as can prime study spots on the main floors of the student unions. One problem is that these areas are often set up to hold small groups of students, and at busy times these spots are often taken up by a single student, rendering four seats more or less taken. However, if you know the areas well, you can always find a nice and private spot somewhere, often in a side room or in the upper stories of the libraries and unions. Describe the surrounding town. Miranda:Columbia is a lovely town and most students (coming from small towns, suburbs, and rural areas) are delighted by the variety of fun, outside establishments and activities, though some students coming from very active urban environments are disappointed. The downtown area is hip and fun, and very often frequented by students. The area beyond is often ignored by students, for better or for worse. It has some nice spots that tend to be secret town gems, as well as some great parks, but its more of a typical, small Midwestern town with Walmarts, big box stores, and chain restaurants dominating. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Miranda:The student body is enormous, but shrinks as it gets subdivided into the many different academic programs and majors. Many general education classes and even some major-required courses are taught in huge lecture halls, but as you continue through your program, smaller, intimate classes offering lots of interaction with classmates and professors will predominate. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Miranda:I nearly missed out on the opportunity to take a class with Jacqui Banaszynski, one of the most highly regarded journalism professors at the Missouri School of Journalism. My final semester, I enrolled in one of her single credit classes, with a focus on interviewing skills. It was one of the densest and most magical courses I have ever taken. We were spellbound each moment of each class period, and the assignments really pushed us out of our comfort zones. I still think of that class regularly, almost every time I conduct an interview.
